The Effect of Depression On Your Mind

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems, However it is more of a mood disorder than a mental health condition because it does not influence how you think or conduct. Depression might strike someone only once, multiple times, or for an extended period of time. It is associated with extremely negative emotions, a loss of enjoyment, and a sustained interest in any physical exercise.

Adults are affected by depression because they are subjected to a long term stresses in their work, bad economic conditions and social interactions, Depression can influence them in a manner can lead to suicide  . According to the World Health Organisation, suicide claims the lives of over 700,000 individuals each year. And it disproportionately affects women.

Young individuals are especially vulnerable to depression and suicidal ideation as a result of many factors related to disintegration of the family, emotional distress, friendship issues, loneliness and lack of self confidence.

In recent years, depression has become the global buzz due to the enormous bad sentiments that depression generates, which lead  young people to commit suicide as a result of life's stresses and fear of the future. In such circumstances, this phenomena has become a severe threat to young people, and its sources must be identified and addressed.

 Causes of Depression:

Long-term stress is a typical cause of depression. Loneliness, negative thinking, childhood experiences, death of a loved one, divorce, terrible emotional feelings, relationship breakdown, alcohol and drugs, disease, all of these stressful life events can contribute to depression disorder. However, there are numerous more causes of depression that are linked to each individual's mind set, self-confidence, and egoism.

 Depression in Young  people:

Adolescents are more likely to experience bad moods and sadness as a result of the influence of their sex hormones, which interfere with the development process. When teenagers feel depression, they are more likely to harm themselves. Suicidal cases as a result of depression have been documented by WHO to occur between the ages of 15 and 29. So, The most typical symptoms include exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, lack of appetite, loss of interest in previously appreciated routine activities, loss of interest in school, friends, and family, feelings of shame and hopelessness, and loneliness. If you are concerned about your son, do not hesitate to consult with your doctor or mental health professionals.

Depression in adults &elder people:

Psychic depression is distinguished by emotional and bodily symptoms. It is estimated that roughly 5.7% of  elder people are suffering from depression. It can interfere with their interests, sleep, and eating.  Overthinking caused by social isolation and loneliness can lead to chronic depression in the elderly. Furthermore, some disorders such as heart disease, hypertension, arterial fibrillation, diabetes, and dementia all play a role in the severity of depression disorder. Prolonged depression in older persons can be a significant risk factor for Alzheimer's disease.

How can depression affects your mind?

Recent studies suggested that over activity of post-synaptic 5-HT2A  receptors in specific parts in the brain  play a role in the onset of depression, psychosis and other mental diseases. People who are suffering from depression are usually have an increased levels of mono amino oxidase A, (an enzyme that is capable of breaking down the neuro-chemical transmitters in your brain resulting in low levels of  nor-epinephrine, serotonin and dopamine hormones). Moreover, Repeat episodes of depression are seemed to more and more can damage the brain over time as many structural and functional changes is being occurred inside your brain. there are many evidences that several parts in the brain shrink in the people have a long term of depression especially in the grey matter areas, an area in the brain has several cells. Such shrinkage occurred within your brain areas is very connected to the impairments of these area ’s functions. depression can lowers the grey matter volume in both hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Both are involved in the process of learning, memory and thinking , planing respectively. The hippocampus part also produces stress hormones as cortisol that can impair the neural developments even other cerebral areas in the brain are also affected by shrinkage as a result of high cortisol level.

Diagnosis of depression:

  • Physical examination. In order to check the patient ’s general  health that may contributes in development of depression.
  • Laboratory test. for testing the thyroid gland normal functions.
  • Mental Health evaluation by asking questions by psychiatric doctor about the patient ’s mood, live events, feelings, his social relation ships, sleeping pattern and activities.

Treatment  of depression:

By using the antidepressant medications listed below. The therapeutic impact usually appears after 2-3 weeks of drug administration and is directly related to the adaptive changes that occur in neuronal receptors.

1. Tricyclic Antidepressants as  Imipramine, Amitriptyline

They block neuronal re-uptake of both serotonin and adrenaline neurotransmitters, causing them to accumulate in synaptic gaps and brain tissue. It has been found that improving emotional symptoms is related to improving serotonin transmission, however improving biological functioning is not related to improving adrenaline transmission.

2. Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRI) as Fluoxetine, SertralineThese medications are thought to be safer than other antidepressant medications. They selectively inhibit serotonin reuptake, causing it to accumulate in brain tissue.

3. Atypical Heterocycling Antidepressants as Maprotiline, Trazodone.

These drugs  are mostly different in their action unlike the action of other antidepressant drugs.

4. Mono Amine Oxidase Inhibitors as  Clorgyline, Selegiline.

They are frequently described when other medications do not function as effectively since they have very serious side effects and may interact with foods. They inhibit monoamine oxidase. An enzyme, which is generally located in the cytoplasm of nerve cells in the brain. It works by breaking down and eliminating neurotransmitters such as nor-adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine. As a result of their inhibitory activity on this enzyme, these medications can cause a buildup of certain neurotransmitters within neural tissue.
